Health and Social Care

Health and Social Care is a subject offered in Years 10 and 11.

Key Stage 4

Students will be studying two units in Year 10 and two in Year 11.

In Year 10 these will be:

Unit 1: Communication in Health and Social Care

This will help students to gain an understanding of communication skills in the context of health and social care sectors.

Unit 9: Creative and Therapeutic Activities in Health and Social Care

This unit will help students consider how creative and therapeutic activities might be used within health and social care settings and understand their benefits and how they should be carried out safely for all users.

In Year 11 these will be:

Unit 2: Individual Rights in Health and Social Care

Learners will gain knowledge and understanding of the issues that need to be considered when working in a health and social care setting in a multicultural, diverse society.

Unit 5: Vocational Experience in a Health and Social Care Setting

Students will apply for and complete 60 hours of work experience in a health and social care setting.  They will demonstrate appropriate interpersonal skills and reflect on their own performance in the work place.
Other skills and qualities students will develop:

  • Empathy and the ability to see the world from another point of view
  • Clear presentation and communication skills
  • Greater awareness of individual people’s needs and health issues
  • Greater awareness and understanding of values which inform the practise of health and social care professionals
  • A good understanding of issues relating to equal opportunities and treating everyone with respect and value regardless of individual differences
  • Negotiation, collaboration, enquiry and team work skills

Detailed below is the course outline together with assessment information.  Students will study two compulsory units as follows:

Unit 1 Human Lifespan Development

  • It is the study of human growth and development and the factors which affect this. We will be looking at four areas: physical, intellectual, emotional and social growth and development. This unit will give you a clear understanding of the support available to manage the changes caused by life events.

This unit is an externally examined unit. It is worth 25% of the final marks. It is a one hour paper.

Unit 2 Health & Social Care Values

  • This unit looks in depth at the values which underpin good practice in health and social care. These values include dignity, confidentiality safeguarding, respect and ensuring service users are at the centre of the care they are given. This unit help recognition of where the values we all appreciate can be applied in health & social care contexts

This unit is assessed by a series of assignments set by your teacher.
Students will study two optional units as follows:

Unit 3 Effective Communication in Health & Social Care

  • Ensuring you understand the principles of communicating with others of all ages and abilities effectively. Health & Social care professionals need good communication skills to develop positive relationships and to share information with people.

You will be assessed by a series of assignments set by your teacher.
The last unit will be from one of the following list:

  • Social Influences on Health and Wellbeing
  • Promoting Health and Wellbeing
  • The impact of nutrition on health and wellbeing
  • Equality and diversity in Health and social care
  • Individual right in health and social care
