Modern Foreign Languages

"You live a new life for every language you speak. If you only know one language, you only live once."   Czech proverb

Learning a foreign language is a liberation from insularity and provides an opening to other cultures. A high-quality languages education fosters students’ curiosity and tolerance and deepens their understanding of the world. The teaching enables students to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing. It also provides opportunities for them to communicate for practical purposes, learn new ways of thinking and read great literature in the original language. Language teaching provides the foundation for learning further languages, equipping students to study and work in other countries.

Aims
The languages curriculum at Queen Elizabeth’s Girls’ School aims to ensure that students from all backgrounds:

  • develop skills and resilience so they can understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources

  • speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation

  • can write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt

  • discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in the language studied.

We take individual needs and styles into account and seek to establish an aspirational, high-achieving culture. Teaching focuses on developing the breadth and depth of students’ competence in listening, speaking, reading and writing, based on a sound foundation of core grammar and vocabulary. It enables pupils to understand and communicate personal and factual information that goes beyond their immediate needs and interests, developing and justifying points of view in speech and writing, with increased spontaneity, independence and accuracy. It provides suitable preparation for further study.
