Physical Education

“Intelligence and skill can only function at the peak of their capacity when the body is healthy and strong.”  President John F. Kennedy

A high-quality physical education curriculum inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in physical activity, including traditional sports and other physical activities. It should provide opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. Pupils can develop intra and inter-personal skills, gain a better understanding of their body and minds as well as explore the world around them, all through conceptual learning and engaging in physical activity. Opportunities to compete in sport and other meaningful activities build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect.

Aims
The Physical Education curriculum at Queen Elizabeth’s Girls’ School aims to ensure that all pupils from all backgrounds and abilities:

  • Develop competence in fundamental motor skills to allow them to excel in a broad range of physical activities.
  • Develop physical fitness, mental capacity and resilience to allow them to be physically active for sustained periods of time.
  • Gain knowledge and understanding of health, fitness and wellbeing in order to lead healthy, active lives.
  • Develop and use a range of individual and team tactics and strategies to outwit opponents in direct competition.
  • Take part in outdoor and adventurous activities which present intellectual and physical challenges and be encouraged to work in a team, building on trust and developing skills to solve problems, either individually or as a group.
  • Analyse their own and other performances compared to previous ones and demonstrate improvement across a range of physical activities.
  • Engage in competitive sports and activities.
  • Develop confidence in physical movement and resilience in challenging situations
  • Develop leadership and communication skills in a range of sports and activities

In Physical Education lessons, we take individual needs and styles into account and seek to establish an aspirational, high-achieving culture where pupils are developed to succeed in their own way.

Those pupils who grasp skills and tactics and strategy concepts rapidly are challenged through being offered advanced, progressive activities before any acceleration through new content in preparation for key stage 4. Those who are not sufficiently fluent will be given the opportunity to consolidate their skills and understanding, through additional practice, before moving on.
